Higher education students hire other parties to complete their assignments

Concern over cheating at a higher education institution developed, so an investigation was undertaken. It turned out that students were employing third parties to complete their homework, coursework, and exams.

After the problem at the University of South Africa (Unisa) became really serious, the Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Innovation, Dr. Blade Nzimande, ordered an impartial investigation into the growing problem of cheating at higher education institutions.

A Unisa tutor has reportedly claimed that pupils have asked him to assist them in cheating in the past, with many claiming that they did so out of desperation.

Education activist, Hendrick Makaneta says that every student is trying to achieve their university degree and some will go as far as accepting any opportunity to get ahead from tutors or students who have previously completed the courses they are currently completing.

In the 2020 and 2021 academic years, when students had to use online learning for both learning and writing tests and exams, Makaneta claims that he is not surprised that the issue of cheating grew worse.

For the 2022 test period, there were 10,954 occurrences of academic misconduct, which has sparked questions about the validity of higher education institutions and academic fraud.

According to Makaneta, “it may show in the quality of work that these graduates will be doing in the different fields that they are in.”

He claims that companies might be wary of graduates with credentials from schools whose reputation has been called into doubt due to academic fraud and dishonesty.

Students have been using more Artificial Intelligence apps to finish their tasks, and according to Makaneta, universities need to put in place systems that can identify when students are using this type of technology for their schoolwork.

He said:

“Universities must discover a technique to identify any fraudulent activity that students may be engaging in. Universities are not just responsible for ensuring that their students conduct themselves in an ethical manner.”

If the existing method of evaluation has flaws, Makaneta also recommends that colleges develop alternative methods of conducting assessments.

To prevent cheating and academic dishonesty, he thinks that most tests shouldn’t be given online so that students may be watched as they take them.
