Empowering Female Learners Through the Study Abroad Initiative

Language learning, personal development, and improved academic experience are just a few advantages of studying abroad. Additionally, it offers the chance to create lifetime friends, learn about the history and culture of another nation, and develop important job opportunities.

A recent initiative to provide at least ten girls with scholarships to study overseas was supported by Her Excellency Ambassador Moleboheng Matli, who serves as the president and chairperson of the Women African Tourism Board.

The Moleboheng Matli Foundation, a Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) that emphasises the girl child, is behind the African Youth Exchange Scholar Programme.

According to the NPO, selecting female learners is not only based on gender-related considerations, but also on the fact that these students are more likely to become pregnant early, take on the role of mother in a home with children, and thus fall behind in their academic pursuits.

In an interview, Matli explained that the Foundation has collaborated with the Greater Memphis Chamber of Commerce in the state of Tennessee, through their Historically Black Community Universities in securing ten full board scholarships for the 2024 academic year for girls in South Africa and Nigeria. It is through such initiatives that the NPO aims to bring change in the content, education being the catalyst of change.

From South Africa, we will be collaborating with Alex High in Alexandra and Sandown High School in Sandton, according to Matli.

In order to unite the various communities while ensuring resource sharing, Panyaza Lesufi, the former Gauteng Education Minister, placed these two schools together.

The Foundation currently has the schools under official adoption as a part of its continuous process, allowing them to be a part of the transformation in education and also allowing the schools to help the foundation identify the top ten academically performing female students.

How Do Scholarships Work?

Scholarships are a type of financial help given to students for additional education based on factors such as academic merit, diversity and inclusion, athletic ability, and financial need.

They are essentially an award of money that does not need to be repaid and can lower the cost of tuition, making higher education more feasible.

The requirements are consistent with the ideals and objectives of scholarship donors. Scholarships also differ in their level of generosity; some just pay a portion of the cost of tuition, while others offer a full ride that includes housing, meals, and other expenses.
